‘Showtime’ as cinema primed for revamp

'Showtime' as cinema primed for revamp

A much-loved local icon is set for a long-awaited makeover, with the Euroa Community Cinema awarded $130,000 in Victorian Government funding in the 2020-21 Budget.

After last month missing out on federal funding, some passionate advocacy from Strathbogie Shire and the cinema's band of loyal supporters has paid dividends, which will see a much needed overhaul for the family friendly attraction.

Works to be carried out will include re-painting of the walls, polishing of the floorboards, cleaning of the drapes and replacing the very old second-hand chairs (however, the historical seating will still remain!).

Once complete, film-goers will be able to enjoy their favourite flicks while seated on modern chairs and inside a lovingly restored cinema that continues to exude charm and character.

Strathbogie Shire Mayor, Cr Chris Raeburn, said the announcement was exciting not only for the community, but for all those who have worked so tirelessly.

"For the past three years, several departments and officers within Strathbogie Shire, along with our cinema volunteers, have been putting together proposals and submitting applications to upgrade the interior of the cinema," Cr Raeburn said.

"Much lobbying has taken place over the past six months, with our local State and Federal MPs made aware of the importance of this work.

"The cinema is an incredibly important cultural asset. We look forward to celebrating the launch of the 'new look' Euroa Community Cinema in 2021."

The funding forms part of a $35 million Victorian Government investment in regional communities to improve creative spaces.

Since opening in 2003, the Euroa Community Cinema has hosted thousands of screenings and featured hundreds of different films. Over 17 years, many volunteers have brought the cinema to life over the weekends, assisting with the projector, selling tickets and working in the kiosk.

The works will complement significant investments from Strathbogie Shire through the 2020-21 Budget to improve local amenity, including commitments for parks and gardens, libraries and swimming pools.
