Council looks forward to guiding hand

9 Sep 2021

Strathbogie Shire Council is today announcing the appointment of Municipal Monitor Janet Dore to help guide the team in coming months.

Mayor, Cr Chris Raeburn, said the appointment was made at the request of Council and all Councillors were looking forward to the learning opportunity.

“We are a team of seven Councillors across five wards, and all but me are first-time Councillors,” Cr Raeburn.

“As a team we share a very common goal and that is to do the best we can for our community.

“We love Strathbogie Shire, and we love our community. We want to ensure we have the best support possible, to do the best we can.

“I want to make it really clear this is about education, learning, and an unwavering commitment to good governance.”

Cr Raeburn said working through the requirements of the new Local Government Act 2020 also meant new challenges for Council, which wanted to ensure its implementation was best practice.

Originally a town planner, Janet Dore had a successful career in senior management in local government and government agencies.

She led the City of Ballarat as Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Newcastle City Council as General Manager and more recently was CEO of the TAC based in Geelong.

Ms Dore has also held board-level roles with NIB, Newcastle Airport, NSW Heritage Council, NSW Sustainability Advisory Council and the Victorian Planning Appeals Tribunal.

“Strathbogie Shire Council should be commended for requesting this appointment. It shows true leadership to reach out and ask for support and education,” Ms Dore said.

“I believe this commitment to ongoing learning in the pursuit of good governance and delivering for the local community should be applauded and I look forward to sharing my experience.”

Ms Dore will start with Council on September 14, 2021. Initially working one to two days a week for a three-month period, with the potential for this to be extended for up to six months.
